Vinyl Siding Showcased on NAHB Tour of Green Homes

At this year’s Tour of Green Homes at the NAHB National Green Building Conference, Cimarron Homes will showcase how builders are incorporating vinyl siding to help achieve points in leading green building programs.

Cimarron builds certified green homes as the norm, and the homes throughout its six Durham, N.C., area communities feature vinyl siding. In recognition of this green building commitment, Cimarron has been chosen as one of only six stops on the 2010 Tour of Green Homes.

Cimarron is a driving force in the green homebuilding market, crafting value-packed homes that are energy efficient, environmentally responsible and surprisingly affordable.

“We are dedicated to green building and it’s our goal to provide these benefits to all home buyers,” says Danny Winters, Cimarron Homes production manager. The 2,130-square-foot home designed for entry-level buyers will be ANSI-approved ICC 700-2008 National Green Building Standard™ certified, projected for the Silver level.

A modern version of the popular Craftsman style, the home features both vertical and horizontal vinyl siding profiles in beautiful earth tone colors. Attractive architectural accessories, including band boards, eave brackets and square columns, provide curb appeal and help complete the Craftsman look.

Vinyl Siding and Green Points

Vinyl siding can contribute to achieving points in leading green building programs numerous ways. Point criteria for the resource and energy efficiency of vinyl siding includes:

  • Life-cycle analysis
  • Site-applied finishing materials
  • Recycled-content building materials (materials with recycled content of 25 to 75 percent)
  • Termite-resistant materials
  • Indigenous materials (depending on the distance between the manufacturing plant and the building site)
  • Innovative practices (product manufacturer’s operation includes environmental management system concept and the production facility is ISO 14001 certified or equivalent)
  • Energy cost performance (insulated vinyl siding may contribute to achieving energy cost performance that exceeds the International Energy Conservation Code requirements from the International Code Council)
  • Building envelope (insulated vinyl siding may contribute to a total building thermal envelope UA that outperforms code minimum values)
